Big Takeover Exclusives is pleased to premiere “Iron Efficiency” by EXEK, a track from the Melbourne, Australia post-punk outfit’s forthcoming third LP Some Beautiful Species Left. Known to subscribe to the Brian Eno philosophy of treating studio resources as additional instrumentation, EXEK’s latest offering perfects their use of multiple edits and overdubs thereby allowing the band more sonic command.

Pertaining to “Iron Efficiency”, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Albert Wolski contributes, “Melodically it occasionally sits somewhere between a horror film score and funk. Particularly the outro. Of course this is all whilst sitting under the umbrella of post punk.”

Elaborating on the track’s intensity he continues, “The outro has synths that build in a semi-tonal progression, a la John Carpenter (American screenwriter, filmmaker, composer). Concurrently there’s also some sensuous guitar; something out of an Isaac Hayes track. An odd pairing but it works, and compliments the lyrics too. As things ain’t always set in their rigid ways.”

The wonderful, robotic chorus, “That I wear an iron cross / That is wear the Nazis lost”, is buoyed by disjointed rhythms and tense dub production. Albert adds, “In regards to the cross lyric, that relates back to skateboarding as it’s the logo for Independent Trucks (Santa Cruz, CA skateboard truck manufacturer). Continuing, “And yet people wearing them are subverting their meaning and that is literally ‘wear’ the Nazi’s lost.”
