Garage rock/pop veterans The Prefab Messiahs will be releasing their new album, Music For Concerned Citizens, on July 9th.

The Prefab Messiahs were born in the basements and underground garage rock scene of the 1980s in “Wormtown,” AKA Worcester, Massachusetts.

A scrappy, fast, and loose band, the Messiahs were purveyors of the punk era that later grew into the garage-psych scene we know and love today. With an ethos that gave the middle finger to ‘The Man,’ the Messiahs helped create the mindset that would make way for contemporaries like Ty Segall, King Tuff, Thee Oh Sees, and more.

Their music was almost lost to obscurity until an anthology recording was reissued in 2013. This, coupled with a reinvigorated psychedelic music scene, led the band to embark on the 30th anniversary “Reunion micro-Tour” and a permanent reunion and reinvestment in new music.

Since reforming, the Messiahs have released two albums, 2015’s Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive and 2018’s Psychosploitation Today. And now Music For Concerned Citizens will arrive in a few weeks.

The Big Takeover is pleased to premiere the music video for the lead single from the record titled “Water Bottle.”

Written from the point of view of the plastic drinking container, the song puts a spotlight on the climate crisis – particularly the perilous ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch.’ Footage of lapping ocean waves colored in various bright hues wash over the viewer, mesmerizing the eyes while the psychedelic-tinted music unfurls.

“I wanted to be the solution, but I’m just another piece of pollution,” they sing over minor chords that heighten the feeling of unease with reverse drum loops and a foreboding chorus anthem.

The song puts the theme of the album front-and-center and highlights the band’s tongue-in-cheek writing style. “Water Bottle” shows that the Messiahs can balance their flippant sense of humor with a more poignant side of social commentary.

The track continues the band’s longstanding punk rock ethos combined with a flurry of 12-string electric guitars and power pop chorus harmonies that infuse the feeling that there is still hope if we take action now.

“It fit in with the new album’s ‘concerned citizen’ theme,” the band says. “What with our climate crisis being as-yet insufficiently addressed and all.” The message couldn’t come at a better time as our world emerges from one existential crisis i.e. the COVID pandemic, to face another.
