The Rifle is a Tucson-based band led by frontwoman Nelene Deguzman. Her bandmates Kevin Conklin and Randy Rowland join forces to create the ethereal foundation that houses Deguzman’s sweet vocals. The band has roots in bedroom solitude, taking days when you never leave the house and putting them to music.

Anabasis which comes out today, is the full length follow-up to The Rifle’s December 2015 Spill EP, made thanks to generous support from friends, family, and Some Weird Sin Records. Like Spill, Anabasis was recorded and mixed at Midtown Island Studio with frequent collaborator and The Resonars frontman, Matt Rendon.

Anabasis is available on tape via Baby Tooth Records, as well as CD and digital download.

As a 3-piece, the trio reaches some classic sounds, channeling ’70s acid rock and Carole King vocals, and invites the audience to feel subdued to powerful moods. Since DeGuzman hasn’t forgotten that being alone in a room can grow to a massive force, this quality comes alive with drums and bass, offering a potent atmosphere dynamic intensity and gentle caresses.

The single “Down Deep Down”, which The Big Takeover premieres here, channels both these extremes, waxing and waning between subtle high Plains drift and bluesy organ press on the verses and electric guitar-led psych-rock on the chorus sections. Through it all, Deguzman presides with a cautionary assurance, drawing her words out in a sweetly ripened tone.
