Video premiere: "Palmas & Paradiso" by Son Step

Son Step
28 June 2016

“This song is meant to be a frenetic, bouncy essay about dreaming, and acting from the unconscious,” said Son Step bassist/vocalist Chris Coyle of this latest output from the adventurous electro-world-fusion trio. “It was one of the first tunes we worked out live after Joel [Sephy Gleiser, vocals & electrics] joined the group. We tried building lots of layers over top of a basic but addictive rhythm, and Joel helped us flesh out the outro with some shifting chords and new sounds.

“I was on vacation with my family at the beach when Jon [Coyle, vocals & electrics] sent out some early mixes of “Palmas & Paradiso” [from the group’s new LP, Natural Majique]. At that point, the kookaburra sample didn’t exist in the intro, and I hadn’t laid down the bari sax that comes in towards the end. All of the looping synths were there, and they reminded me so much of the looping LED’s on the Ferris wheel outside of the hotel where we were staying. After a second listen, I grabbed my dad’s phone, went out to the carnival, and looked for any type of looping and flashing light I could shoot.”

The result is a carnival of sound and vision, at once dizzying and joyous. Jump in!
