3 Geminis - S/T EP (Self-Released)

30 September 2015

Los Angeles’ 3 Geminis is the solo project of Fred Carrico. His approach to the traditional rock format is reminiscent of a more electronic Black Keys or Muse. On their new self-titled EP, 3 Geminis force upon you an unrelenting barrage of noise and guttural emotions. From the dance groove of “On The Ground Again” to the stabbing strings of “Lost,” there is something of a robotic feel to the instrumentals, playing adroitly against Carrico’s vocals which are nothing but unbridled emotion.

The album artwork, featuring a phalanx of identical image of Carrico in a row, makes perfect sense in a somewhat humorous way, because although the EP is largely the work of one individual, the sound is massive and thunderously powerful. A wall of noise and layers upon layers of guitars and synths are crammed into something that would normally take most an entire full length to fulfill.

The only brief relief comes from “Got My Girl,” but even though that starts off quietly enough with acoustic guitars, it before long builds into a nuclear explosion of post-apocalyptic distortion. There’s plenty of bands trying to do something similar to this, but what will undoubtedly cause 3 Geminis to stand out from the pack is Carrico’s devotion to brutally, unadulterated emotion and energy.
