A New Bug - A New Bug (A New Bug/Bandcamp)

A New Bug Bandcamp
21 March 2014

Long Island’s music scene may be dominated by tribute and cover bands, but once in a while a band of striking originality crawls out of the cesspool. On their debut full-length, hard psyche trio A New Bug deliver nine excellently written songs that show how little convention and formulas interest them.

A New Bug is a hybrid of genres fused together to make powerful rock’n‘roll. Among the Grand Funk, MC5 and Hendrix-style riffage, grunge elements and a punk attitude burst forth to create something wholly genuine and unpretentious. Eddie Lo screams in a raspy Jim Morrison howl, while his guitar dances around the tight rhythm section of bassist Nick Diaz and drummer Mike Boulanger. Fuzzed-out chords collide with wah-wah solos, adding a touch of early Soundgarden and Alice in Chains to the mix. Not ’70s enough to be a complete throwback and not grunge enough to be a mere imitation, A New Bug carve their own niche, deaf ears be damned.

All too often, bands with such raw talent from indifferent areas fall through the cracks and go to waste. Don’t let this happen to A New Bug. They’re just too damn good to be forgotten footnotes.
