It’s been years since we’ve heard anything new from The Breeders‘ Kelly Deal, so it’s exciting to hear the debut of R. Ring, her new project, a duo with Mike Montgomery, of the band Ampline. The two songs found on this debut are like a refreshing drink of water after wandering in the desert. Deal’s voice is as strong as ever; “Fallout & Fire” finds her cooing and seductive, over a simple, haunting guitar riff. The flipside “See” finds at Montgomery in the vocal booth, singing a fast-paced rocker, with Deal’s vocal accompaniment being a nice fit with his voice. Both songs are over way too fast; there’s great promise here. Let’s hope a full-length is coming soon!
