Truth & Salvage Co. – s/t (Megaforce/Silver Arrow/Angelus)

1 July 2010

North Carolina’s TRUTH & SALVAGE CO. occupies a curious space in popular music. Proteges of the BLACK CROWES (not that it means anything stylistically), the roots rocking sextet sometimes comes off as a marketing concept, but other times as possibly the most good-naturedly sincere band on the block. The group’s solidly written but fairly plain countryish rock and pop songs sound less like the spawn of the No Depression crowd and more like KEITH URBAN‘s vaguely twangy popcraft (with a side of the ALLMAN BROTHERS‘ “Ramblin’ Man” and DOBIE GRAY‘s “Drift Away”), yet the band is definitely on the indie rock track to modest success – there’s no Nashville slickness to their image, that’s for sure. And maybe that’s appropriate. Having seen this band play live and seen the apparently genuine joy it gets from performing its music, I’m guessing the Co. doesn’t give a shit how it’s perceived by the media or critical establishment – it’s just doing what it does and inviting people to like it. And with undeniably catchy tunes like “Call Back,” “Hail Hail” and “She Really Does It For Me” on deck, I bet plenty of folk will dig what they lay down. I have to admit that _ Truth & Salvage Co._ leaves me fairly cold – I don’t doubt the combo’s sincerity, but I’m stymied by its lack of imagination. But don’t take my word for it – no doubt Truth & Salvage Co. is already some well-rounded music fan’s favorite band, and far be it from me to deny the band its due.
