Black Dirt Studio in Upstate NY has hosted many fine clients over the years, including artists on Thrill Jockey, Northern Spy and Sub Pop. Black Dirt Oak assembles several artists from numerous bands (Pelt, GHQ, Rhyton, Georgia, Flown, NNCK and Pigeons, to name a few), who have made the studio a second home, to create a supergroup of rural sorcery.
Wawayanda Patent is magical, mysterious, the sound of hillbilly occultists conjuring spirits from the black ground upon which they stand. Ethereal drones rise from the dust, morphing dimensions into sacred spaces. Banjos, slide and acoustic guitars become portals to realms beyond our comprehension, where inner peace has a disturbing quality and eerie voices create calm. Fuzzy psychedelic guitars dance over synthesized noises and the ancients who once ruled the black earth are emperors once again.
An album as dense as this requires repeated listenings just to take it all in. It certainly ranks up there as one of the headiest bluegrass/blues records ever recorded. Delve in, but be warned: once you take the plunge, there is no turning back. And that’s a very good thing.
