Deerhoof/Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog - split 7" (Northern Spy)

Deerhoof Ceramic Dog Northern Spy
9 April 2014

In a celebratory merging of the East and West Coasts, two veterans of avant-garde music collaborate for a Record Store Day 7” that’s sure to get all salivatory juices running.

Deerhoof’s side “Who Sleeps, Only Dreams” is a reworking of their “Qui Dorm, Només Somia” from Deerhoof vs. Evil, only with Marc Ribot’s guitar in place of Satomi Matsuzaki‘s vocals. The resulting version moves from Miles Davis fusion to King Crimson prog to Heldon heaviness to a Gone-like groove in the span of a minute, then blends them all together with a Spanish flair for the remaining two minutes. Ceramic Dog’s offering, “Hide With Me,” attacks with a stoner rock ferocity, recalling the likes of Blue Cheer, Orange Goblin and Funhouse-era Stooges. It may only be seven minutes of music, but it leaves you exhausted from all the insane musicianship that comes dancing out of your speakers.

As gimmicky as Record Store Day is, it’s releases like this that make it worth the superficial hype. Get off your ass and down to your local vinyl vault on April 19th for this one.
