Always unpredictable, Instagon return with a collection of spacey, yet sparse, previously unreleased recordings from 2007 and 2008.
True to form, the tracks comprising Thee Start Ov Thee End are improvised by a multitude of musicians gathering around frontman Lob‘s bass. While not quite jazz, not really noise and definitely not rock, these recordings hover somewhere between the three, for the most part recalling Steve Lacy‘s free jazz/noise collaborations. Random instruments waft in and out, but the result is never outright chaos: There is always a focused delivery, even when it turns to squelching static noise, as in “Funeral For A Droid.” These are some of Instagon’s stranger recordings, pieces sounding like they’d belong in a Twilight Zone episode or the soundtrack to some bizarre Something Weird flick if viewed on acid. It’s a head-scratcher, for sure, but one that’s not so entirely “out there” as to lose all sense of musicality.
Instagon’s importance lies in their ability to morph, adapt and always deliver strong recordings, no matter where their mood is. We never know what we’ll get and that’s most of the fun. Relax and enjoy.
