Another fine example of China’s ever-growing music scene, Beijing’s Luvplastik, a bass/drums duo comprised of British ex-pats (one of which is Dann Gaymer from GuiGuiSuiSui & the Electric Shadows), deliver a strong debut built on fuzzy ’70s garage rock.
“Place To Go” starts things off with a cool, soul-inspired bass riff over insistent drums, but, when the distortion kicks in, things get heady in a Cosmic Psychos way. From there, the four remaining songs don’t let up. Super-charged stoner basslines, which are a little Lemmy and a little Mark Farner, rock over heavy drums, while the vocals recall Boston proto-punk icon Dennis Most as they shout, wail and occasionally sing to the music. It’s badass rock’n‘roll served up right – all sex, drugs and volume.
Such a strong beginning can only mean great things for the future. Keep an eye on Luvplastik and the entire China underground scene in general. They’re quite special.
