While not really a black metal band per se, York, PA’s Night successfully conjure the dark atmospheric quality of the genre, creating post-rock atmospheric tracks that draw as much from Mogwai as they do from Burzum.
Offerings opens with “Graverot,” a lumbering Melvins-ish doom track, before segueing into “Maps,” a track that perfectly encapsulates Night’s instrumental sound, where elements of Godspeed You! Black Emperor! and the aforementioned Mogwai blend with the black post-rock metal of the original incarnation of Egypt’s Ultramundane. “Bodache” adds throbbing Hawkwind-esque spacerock to the stew, which continues through “Shapeshifter” and the dark psychedelic metal of the closing title track, while “Winter” and “Origins” somehow recall the Anglo-Saxon metal of Forefather.
As far as debuts go, this one is pretty impressive. These sprawling instrumentals paint a soundscape through the minds of these three South-Central Pennsylvanian musicians. What comes next will surely be even more exciting.
