Imagine hiking in the Himalayas, rounding a corner and discovering the alien spaceship responsible for the world’s religion and technology. The soundtrack to that moment would have to be composed by NYMPH.
New Millenium Prayer is droning, spacey, spiritual ecstasy. Guitar lines repeat raga-style to trance-inducing beats, propelling vocalist Eri Shoji‘s Yoko Ono as a Shinto priest outbursts. “Beyond” sets things up with an Eastern-flavored meditation, part pre-Khmer rouge Cambodian rock’n‘roll, part Acid Mothers Temple mind-expansion and part Master Musicians of Jajouka hypnosis. “Battle Funk” sounds like Fela Kuti having an acid freakout, while “Raag Mon” moves into krautrock territory a la early Faust, Ash Ra Tempel or Tangerine Dream‘s Electronic Meditation, which then segues into the title track, a psychedelic Beme Seed-like romp through hyperspace that brings the trip to an orgasmic end where enlightenment becomes an outdated achievement.
In a world where stress is a fact of everyday life, NYMPH offer an alternative state where we can escape and visit unexplored realms of inner and outer space. Take the vacation and see where you end up.
