Austerlitz, NY’s Pigeons have undergone many changes, both in sound and lineup – a flexibility that has allowed them to deliver a masterpiece of genuine psychedelia on their eighth full-length.
The Bower floats in the airy headiness of late ’60s West Coast psychedelic rock bands like The United States of America and Jefferson Airplane. Wednesday Knudsen’s soft vocals reveal an inner strength, perfectly complimenting her fluid, dreamy guitar, which plays off the deceptively subtle rhythm section of bassist Clark Griffin and drummer Rob Smith. Vintage distortion adds an edge, while sinister freakouts expose a darker side. Enhanced by primitive production, it’s the lost classic sought out by record collectors that never was.
Many imitators try and fail to capture the magical essence of true psychedelia, but Pigeons have successfully reached into the past and brought it with them into the future. Step into a time warp and trip out on exceptional music.
