In 1985, The Apartments, from Brisbane, Australia, released an LP on Rough Trade that was heralded as an immediate classic. Remastered for the first time, this expanded reissue compiles that seminal LP with the group’s earliest singles and demo recordings for a comprehensive look at their origins.
The Evening Visits… filters the best of underground ’80s Anglo rock into a single focal point. Elements of The Psychedelic Furs, New Order and especially The Smiths combine with nods to The Birthday Party, John Lennon and Simply Red. Ever moody and marked by chamber orchestration, the songs channel storm-laden angst on a cloudy day – melodic, emotive, but dark with the rage of misdirected youth. The early 7“s hail from the pure beginnings of post-punk, i.e., rougher representations of aesthetics later expressed on the album, while the demos, recorded in New York City circa 1983, provide the basis for what would become a solid work two years later. It’s the perfect assemblage of early recordings by a band that remains relevant and daring to this day.
Australian music has always been a bastion of guts and originality. Turn up The Apartments and feel that unique Oz vibe twisting through your bones.
