Seminal UK post-punk band, The Pop Group, ushers in a series of reissues with a re-release of their 1980 final statement.
Compiling demos, live performances and rare studio recordings from 1978-79, We Are Time sees the group at their rawest and roughest, fully embroiled in the left-wing anger of their youth. Funk and dub rhythms collide with trebly staccato guitars punctuated by Mark Stewart’s oddly inflecting vocals. Effectively Bristol’s answer to New York’s Contortions, the band’s noted influence on the likes of The Birthday Party and The Minutemen clearly shines, culminating in the Stooge-y Funhouse skronk of the ravenous title track. It’s essential listening for anyone interested in the initial shift away from standard punk rock that bred the post-punk movement.
Considering that their original catalog has been out of print for over thirty years, these reissues are long overdue and welcome additions to the libraries of music fans across the globe. For now, we just enjoy and wait for the next one.
