Born when Charles Bert of Math & Physics Club and Boat’s Dave Krain recruited Jigsaw label owner Chris McFarlane to record some songs outside their respective bands, Seattle-based indie poppers, Unlikely Friends, serve a solid debut on a golden platter.
Solid Gold Cowboys boasts well-crafted, catchy melodies sold through the grey, cloudy haze of the Pacific Northwest. Tales of breaking relationships, insomnia, frustration and distrust add a tinge of darkness to the upbeat sounds, which draw heavily from The Beach Boys both in the underlying production and vocal harmonies. It’s the album Guided By Voices fans will savor when Robert Pollard takes a twenty-six minute break.
When the sun is setting on a day of disappointment and failure, Unlikely Friends will be there to let you know you’re not alone. Sometimes, that’s all you need to hear.
