Cell 63 - 11-DEMO-13 (Cell 63/Bandcamp)

Cell 63 11-DEMO-13 Bandcamp
12 February 2014

From the ashes of Crank, Upstate NY’s Cell 63 continue the noisy punk onslaught with four songs that show the trio at the top of their game.

Being a demo, the production value is lacking a bit, but it’s punk rock: if you want pristine recording there’s lots of overproduced pablum to be had elsewhere. Otherwise, these four raging songs recall the relentless onslaught of Hammerhead, especially in the unpredictable syncopated riffs, though with a touch of Upstate hardcore, e.g., Devoid of Faith, in Danny Cuciti‘s guttural, animalistic vocals. Bill Hunter‘s bass is thick and heavy, a perfect accompaniment to Jeff Pison‘s complicated ride-heavy beats. It’s kinda Cro-Mags via Motörhead goodness, packing the punch you need to get up in the morning.

Danny has been playing his style of punk rock since his days in the often overlooked ’80s hardcore band, Affirmative Action, and to those original tenets, he has held true. This is older but wiser punk rock, the kind that has no use for tired riffs and cookie-cutter lyrics, that, quite frankly, couldn’t give a rat’s ass what you think about it. If you’re ready, give it a shot. You just might like it.
