Austin’s baroque composer collective, Some Say Leland, find new perspectives on their latest long player, Brought Low.
Beauty abounds in album opener “Moving Fast/Broken Down.” Its sweeping passages give the listener a true sense of the serene landscape from which the album was recorded (Marfa, TX) and the intentions of the group going forward. Early highlight, “Blinking Lights,” finds acoustic fingerpicking joined by remarkable guitars and jazz drones, elevating the group into exciting new territory. “Cypress Tree” exposes the collective’s steadfast zeal for beauty, while “Theater Fire” and “It’s All Right Here,” showcase SSL’s continued allegiance to lyrical songcraft. The LP is epitomized though by late bloomer, “Be Where You’d Been.” The track demonstrates the sound the group has been trying to bottle since it’s inception. The simple, expressive delivery of Dan Grissom is placed dead center inside of blooming, elegant soundscapes, with all the elements gracefully galloping together to the finish line.
Brought Low can be defined as being humbled by something out of one’s control. As a record, it celebrates that loss of control and exemplifies the confidence we all need to get there.
