After several European albums since their forming in 2006, Czech duo Dva finally get their first domestically available American release.
Nipomo is fun and playful, an upbeat tech-folk assembled from loops, field recordings and saxophone, driven by the happy, at times silly, vocals of Bára Kratochvílová, who sings in a made up language. The songs range from Stereolab-ish lounge in “Surfi” to oddball afrobeat in “Mulatu” to an almost ZGA-type industrial in “Javornicek” and everywhere in between. Sounds of ping-pong, oceans and birds float in and out, making this music a celebration of nature. In fact, Dva’s music could have been composed by some mythical forest creature who only comes out when spring turns to summer. It’s strange, but engaging, pleasant music that comes from a complete joy of living.
As a first release for the American market, this is a strong offering that, hopefully, will encourage domestic reissues of their other records, as well as many more in the future.
