On her tenth album, LA singer-songwriter, Mia Doi Todd, explores her love of nature with covers of her favorite Brazilian songs sung in their native Portuguese.
Floresta is airy and light, the sound of a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves. Backed by seven-string nylon guitarist, Fabiano do Nascimento, and bassist, Meno del Picchia, with percussionists Mauricio Takara (São Paulo Underground, Hurtmold) and Rogério Martins, Todd delivers passionate renditions of songs by some of Brazil’s most celebrated songwriters, e.g., Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso and Dércio Marques, to name a few. Through the mystery of Portuguese, the singer’s vocals evoke the majestic beauty of uninhabited nature, where plants and animals use each other in synchronicity for survival. It’s the perfect album to waft behind a dinner party, or to take some time off for silent contemplation.
If you’re unfamiliar with Brazilian music, Mia Doi Todd has assembled a perfect springboard from which to begin the journey. Become enraptured in Floresta’s mysticism, then seek out the songwriters who originally produced such incredible music.
