Following 2013’s self-released A Mixtape for the Honeybees, Oakland, CA-based chamber folk experimentalist, Stella Peach, offers her label debut showcasing her vast knowledge of traditional styles within her own unique persona.
Wisdom Teeth is nothing if not strange. Peach’s exuberantly joyful compositions draw from Americana, as well as Celtic and Baroque voices, particularly in her singing, though her arrangements are far from traditional. Relying on found sound sources for percussion, punctuation and general ambiance, she turns the folk dynamic on its head, creating music that is simultaneously immediate and timeless. Violins transform into fiddles and back, merging with home recordings and studio manipulation, while the songcrafter’s voice remains a divining rod of gentle power. It’s the present told in the past tense of the future.
Where Stella Peach will go from here is uncertain, though it is sure to be anything but what is expected. Keep an eye out and be pleasantly surprised by how she grows.
