After being tragically out of print for at least ten years, The Flesh Eaters’ seminal second album from 1981 finally receives a proper reissue on both vinyl and CD.
Featuring an impressive lineup culled from the Los Angeles punk scene including guitarist Dave Alvin and drummer Bill Bateman of The Blasters on guitar, John Doe and DJ Bonebrake from X on bass and marimbas/maracas, respectively, Los Lobos saxophonist Steve Berlin and vocalist/Slash fanzine writer Chris Desjardins, A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die comes across as a twisted LA death rock version of Richard Hell and the Voidoids, all disjointed agony and horror symbolism. Songs range from the sexy sleaze of “See You in the Boneyard” to Fall-ish no wave skronk in “Satan’s Stomp” to the psycho rock’n‘roll of Doe’s composition, “Cyrano De Berger’s Back.” Consistently unpredictable and full of the gritty energy that dominated early LA punk, it’s a veritable classic in the annals of that era.
Excellently remastered with liner notes by Bryon Coley, The Flesh Eaters’ defining moment can finally be appreciated, once again, for the horrific masterpiece it is. Step into the darkness.
