Song Premiere: "Taylor Swift" by Ziggy D’Amato

31 January 2022

The best artists know how to use history in their work. They understand that their work is built upon the artists that preceded them. The challenge, then, becomes how to distill those influences into something fresh and timely. And Cleveland native David “Ziggy” D’Amato walks that fine line between past and present with aplomb on his newest single, “Taylor Swift.”

The song features an easygoing pop sensibility, with D’Amato delivering melodies as if they’re effortless. The sprawling guitar of the intro gives way to a pristine, undeniably pop chorus. A groovy bassline cements the entire song, making space for D’Amato to play with harmony and melody. The guitar work is especially reminiscent of the past; using a wah-wah pedal, D’Amato is able to conjure up the sounds of ’70s funk and corporate rock into something that is neither here nor there.

“Taylor Swift” is the first single from D’Amato’s debut album, Rehearted, due later this year.

“It’s a 25 minute collection of catchy love songs,” he said of the upcoming release. “This is the opening song on the album. Genre-wise, I’d call it pop music consisting of three-part harmonies, ’60s girl-group backup vocals, ’70s wah-wah guitar solos and ’80s over-the-top choruses.”
