EP premiere: Ace Of Swords by Duke Chevalier

Duke Chevalier
15 April 2016

Duke Chevalier is the nom de guerre for the creative output of California-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Eliot Stern and what he termed “a loose cast of co-conspirators.”

Describing his music as “meta-modern cosmopolitan pop music,” the stylish Stern cites “a Bermuda Triangle of influences where the ghost ships of doo wop, soul music, singer-songwriter, garage rock, electronic, 80’s pop, G funk, and Afro-Caribbean music collide into an eclectic mélange that sounds simultaneously futuristic and primitive.”

Hmm. Okay, we’ll buy that. Overall, though, the tropical accents and idiosyncratic, keyboard-driven arrangements on Ace of Swords remind us of David Byrne’s solo work, Andrew Bird, and late-period Roxy Music. The spacey, groovy, “Something For Your Tired Eyes” is our favorite, what do you think? Let us know in the comments!

Ace of Swords comes out tomorrow, both digitally and in a “sleek and saucy pink and gold Ultra Limited Cassette Edition.” Get it here
