5 Years of Bedroom Suck Records (Fire Records)

17 October 2014

Fearless Australian label, Bedroom Suck Records, celebrates it’s 5th year of existence with a double album release of the compilation variety fittingly titled 5 Years of Bedroom Suck Records. The comp features some of their most accomplished (Scott and Charlene’s Wedding and Boomgates), freewheeling (Blank Realm and Per Purpose), and confounding artists (Knee Chin and Marl Karx).

Instead of being filled with ridiculously good singles, of which the label has so so many, the comp alternatively showcases both new and rare performances from acts that have been with them from the get go as well as new acts like Love of Diagrams and Totally Mild who both have releases coming in 2015.

Fans of Blank Realm’s schizo zones will rejoice upon hearing the sequenced pulse of “Digging Up My Bones,” while those digging more off kilter jams can be glad for Per Purpose’s staggering “Blind and Assistant.” Bedroom Suck vets Bitch Prefect deliver more of the goods on “Special Boy,” an almost motorik styled tune full of testy vocals and snide guitar and Boomgates arrives soon after with “Tight Knit,” a song (and band) that continue to give hope to those in a post Go-Betweens world.

This collection effortlessly exhibits the breadth of the label and it’s ear for the unique. Not unlike the classic New Zealand label, Flying Nun, Bedroom Suck is building its own roads to listeners and creating an incredible catalog in the process. Now if we could get them to put together a singles collection…
