Night Marcher - Modern Maze (Self-Released)

1 June 2016

Named after a song by Medeski, Martin and Wood, Night Marcher is a band from Salt Lake City, and the new project of songwriter Rob Reinfurt. A former member of The Weekenders, his new album Modern Maze is a Rock ‘n’ Soul trip influenced by Hawaiian culture. Reinfurt’s tenor is surprisingly refreshing in a climate where similar musicians opt instead for gruff Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen posturing, and it balances the album’s garage soul with a smoother, Smokey Robinson flavor.

Many of the songs—some more obvious than others, with titles like “Holy Ghost” and “People are Screaming Jesus”—deal with religious themes and iconography. Although it is unclear exactly where he stands on the question of religious belief, generally the songs tend to be more pessimistic in tone than not. Light, sun-kissed psychedelica sneaks its way into the album from time to time as well, as heard on the folky picking of “Scars” and the druggy, hazy fog of the closer “Kro.” Yet Reinfurt it truly at his best with all out rockers like the heavenly slice of garage that is “Saint.”

Modern Maze is a fantastic new record from an artist currently in the processing of evolving and reinvigorating himself, and it is nothing short of captivating to listen as he grows.
