Old, New, Borrowed and Jazz
A few months ago, my friend STEPHEN BUONO lent me a whole bunch of CDs. Most of it is jazz, some ‘60s and ‘70s and other, more recent artists like JOHN ZORN, BILL FRISELL and other stalwarts of the old Knitting Factory/Tonic Lower East Side scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Naturally, I’ve been listening to a lot of it lately. Here are 10 of my favorites of these discs.
Pitchfork Music Festival 2008
This is a list of 10 terrific artists that I saw play this past weekend at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago’s Union Park.
Things I Picked up in LA
I recently made a trip to my hometown of Los Angeles and, of course, I came back with a few things.
I bought the first three at Amoeba Records, where I also got extraordinarily ripped off for an old record collection I was selling. (I really miss Aron’s Records…) 4-9 were given to me from a friend at EMI. The last one was waiting in the mail when I came home, courtesy Big Takeover writer Matt Berlyant. (Thank you, Matt!)
Half SONIC YOUTH, half other stuff
I’ve been listening to SONIC YOUTH a lot lately, so half of this week’s list consists of some of their records. The other half consists of other stuff that I’ve been digging lately.
When that old folk song, “Hallelujah I’m A Bum” meets Bo Diddley(R.I.P) (and that ain’t no Johnny Otis whistlin’ “Willie and The Hand Jive”
I heard a Bo Diddley tribute on local college station KALX (and they played songs influenced by him, and hardley ANY Bo-Diddley. Ugh. That’s not what we need. We need more BO DIDDLEY (at least they played The Animals “The Story Of Bo Diddley” alongside “I Want Candy” and The Smiths policies (threatening to become law as so many elected officials remain ignorant of the political, democratic, stakes involved in this issue) is to contact www. savenetradio.org
Drive-In Cult Classics and Conan!
Anyone who know me knows my love of B-movies, especially exploitation/horror films from the 60’s and 70’s. I’m always picking up collections whenever I see them, but I have to say, Drive-In Cult Classics from BCI Entertainment is worth every penny of the $10 I spent on it. These eight movies were all released by Crown International between 1970 and 1980. The film prints are excellent and they’re widescreen.
Obviously, the Conan movies are not part of the set. I just happened to buy them the same day and they numerically round out the list.
Anyone interested in my odd taste in films can see my list of all the movies I own here.
