With perfect weather and many diverse and talented musicians, Pitchfork weekend was off to a great start!
It was such a treat to see Rosali open up the blue stage on Friday! Her 70s tinged guitar driven music did not disappoint earlier this year when she played at the empty bottle and it was perfect for midday of a festival! Although her music is firmly rooted in folk, the fact that she has a backing band of drums, guitar, and bass really helps fill in the songs. In addition, she’s an adept guitarist as well as singer, and did a great job evolving from a softer folk sound and transitioning into more of the rocking songs from her career. Rosali is definitely want to watch in the future as she is incredibly talented and has great potential.!
Tkay Maizda brought both the beats and the energy! For unique style and way of owning a stage came through at her! Appearing as captivating and engaging, she definitely serenaded the crowd With her mix of hip-hop and dance! Maizda reported she traveled 40 hours to get from Australia to Chicago and her presence at the fest was greatly appreciated. Bonus points for her awesome cover of The Pixies song “Where is my Mind?”
Doss continued the high energy of the fest with complex beats and samples that were a definite crowd pleaser!
Don’t underestimate Yaeji because she seems so cute and sweet. Like any powerful performer, she has a vision and her music and performance showed that. Yaeji expressed appreciation of her audience and referenced how far her music has come since playing Pitchfork Music Festival in 2021 and her singing and dancing had the crowd transfixed! Best of all, she seemed to be having the time of her life and the energy was infectious! The choreography between her and her backup dancers was also visually stunning!
There are people with very good taste in music who love 100 Gecs but maybe the duo should still come with a warning label. The band is a little like multiple musical styles thrown into one with a ton of vocoder and unpredictability. Still, they don’t seem to take themselves too seriously and were definitely having fun.
