Poi Dog Pondering recently completed a four-night stand at City Winery Chicago in support of the upcoming CD release of Everybody’s Got a Star. Chicago-based rock photographer Philamonjaro was at City Winery Chicago on Sunday to document the sold-out third night for this photo essay. - Jeff Elbel
Phil reports: The two hour set featured a cross-section of early hits including “Everybody’s Trying,” “Complicated,” “That’s the Way Love Is,” “Be the One,” “Shu Zulu Za” and “Pulling Touch.” Late in the set, the band played The Cure‘s “Close to Me.” Guest singer Carla Prather‘s spine-tingling vocals held the crowd spellbound during “Natural Thing.”
The new material was very well received. Songs from Everybody’s Got a Star included “The Turning,” “Burning Higher” and “When I Wake in The Morning.”
Each Tuesday, the Poi Dog Pondering website will offer one new song as recording progresses. The band consider these to be “digital 45s.” The full CD release will be available afterwards. Although impressive musical layering makes categorization difficult, an attempt goes like this: brilliant, poly-ethnic, instrumentally limitless and infectious danceability, with inspired lyrics and harmonies.
