This was my second time seeing THE GERUNDS and it differed from my initial experience in a variety of ways. First off, they got stuck on a bill with three completely dissimilar bands (all of the instrumental, stoner rock/metal persuasion) and went on first on a Sunday night, thus almost insuring a small turnout. Undaunted, they played a ferocious set that showed them improving drastically from their already hot debut, making the songs tighter and with vocalist PETER CORTNER acting more confident on stage as well. Aside from the five of six originals, of which the highlight was “Native Tongue”, a long, driving, almost Krautrock-like jam, we were also treated to a cover of “The Godfather”, a song by Cortner’s late ’80s band DAG NASTY. Although a few lines were flubbed, it was still great to hear this classic performed live.
The band that followed, SERPENT THRONE, were heavily indebted to BLACK SABBATH and by their own admission. If memory serves, they introduced one song as what would happen if their favorite WISHBONE ASH and Sabbath songs could merge together. The major difference between them and side two of Sabotage is that they are an all-instrumental band. As a huge Sabbath fan, I really enjoyed their set, but I couldn’t help feeling like I’d heard it before. As it was a Sunday night, we left about half an hour into their set and thus missed headliners STINKING LIZAVETA and another band who played after Serpent Throne.
