Halloweekend

25 November 2005

Motherf***er is the best ongoing dark and decadent R&R dance party that I’ve been to since moving to NYC in 2001. I attended my first one the first week I arrived, and I’ve tried to go to each one since. Of course the general public feels the same way about Mofo (again, it’s the best!), so just imagine my horror when I arrived at the Roxy on Friday night and found cops swarming everywhere. Taped to the front of the closed doors were two pumpkin and squash colored signs that described the establishment’s wrongdoing, which was “illegal sale of alcoholic beverages,” whatever that means…

Looking around at the dejected costumed creatures that licked their wounds on various street corners near the closed-down club, I thought, “Did I draw my eyebrows on for this?!” But, thankfully, the extremely helpful SIOUX Z from Magnum PR let me know that the event had been moved down to The Delancey. This was one of those times I was glad to have wheels (dark, spooky, Jetta wheels!) so my lady friend and I hopped in and drove downtown real quick. Once I made it inside the L.E.S. hangout I spent the first part of the evening people watching. Check out these fabulous costumes I spotted…

First there’s this cute little bleeding gothic schoolgirl…

And the scene from the rooftop of The Delancey with some Day of the Dead type ladies…

And of course, the requisite jab at Kurt and Courtney…

After a while I headed downstairs to partake in some dancing. The DJ was spinning THE FAINT’s “Agenda Suicide” right before the ‘show’ began. MICHAEL T (one of the founders of Motherf***er) and the “Rocky Horror follies” began with a fabulous lip-synch to “Sweet Transvestite.” This was followed by a rollicking skit led by MS. PEPPERMINT GUMMYBEAR to MICHAEL JACKSON’s “Thriller.” They apologized that due to the limited space the whole live show had to be re-arranged, but it was still great fun and nobody seemed to mind too much. After the floorshow the DJ cued up the music again, beginning with AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” I spent the rest of the evening dancing the night away, and before I was even out the door I began dreaming of the next Mofo and what kind of surprises it might have in store…
