Part of a long tradition of jazz labels bringing experience musicians together for a super session, Tenor Time gathers the talents of tenor saxophonists Scott Burns, John Wojciechowski and Geof Bradfield for an old-fashioned blowout. Backed by drummer Greg Artry, bassist Clark Sommers and pianist/label owner Richard D. Johnson, the horny threesome (sorry) avids turning the record into a cutting contest – no one’s trying to outdo anyone else, or show off their fanciest moves for the loudest applause. But there’s a relaxed vibe to the sessions, as if everyone came in with the intention to just lay down some good tunes and have a good time. The songs (all originals) groove, the rhythms swing, and the harmony-riffing saxists spread the solo space around generously, letting Johnson tickle some tasty ivories as well. If you’re looking for tracks to recommend to your local public radio jazz show, give Burns’ bebopping “Force Majeure,” Wojciechowski’s cerulean round “Altar Blues” or Johnson’s melodic Chick Corea tribute “Corea” a spin. Tenor Time transports you to a late night set at your favorite jazz club.
