Seattle’s Acapulco Lips returns with Now, a strong effort paying homage to ’60s psych, garage rock, and even girl groups of the ’60s. The soaring melodies are reminiscent of tracks off the Girls In The Garage compilations, but with faster supporting tempos to create a more updated sonic approach. Mastered by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks, Acapulco Lips sounds clean and crisp on Now, but without sacrificing urgency. The band’s strengths lie in crafting memorable garage rock melodies, but it can be a bit off-target when venturing into more psychedelic territory. Acapulco Lips are recommended for fans seeking an updated, garage pop sound with stronger vocal melodies captured in more modern production sounds.
