Hi-kicking and ass-kicking, Philly’s Bandname is a kinetic ball of fun. Their new full length, Breakfast is a rad collection of sun-drenched punk chops for the uncynical. Surprisingly subtle shifts in riffage and beat occur in every tight little tune.. 12 of them zoom in about half an hour! The party crashes open with the lead chant along “Opportunity” and sets a relentless pace from there. Hype tune after hype tune that carry in them glints of AC/DC shred, trancey psych garage bringing to mind Elevator to Hell , some melodic pop punk a la Mice . Vocals too switch up gender around “Got It All”, which slows midway to a killer anthemic breakdown. The little happy hooks keep dangling with road trip mix-fodder “Take Me Home”, washes off (with some Sonic Youth vibes) in the boy-girl trade off of “New Unusual” before pounding to a rousing finish with straight up rockers “Walls” and harmony-laden closer “Wonder Why”. A total blast of an album and generously short to boot!
Bandname are a whole aesthetic package, little swirly circles of color float freely inside the CD packaging, they included some larger swirly color patches that adorn our kitchen wall. Merch and their releases feature complex and hilarious cartoon tableaus mixed with no-rez photoshopping. Totally fun and engaging, their joyful approach translates into a fierce live set too. This is exactly the sort of band that pisses off the churlish and boring punk “purists”. Which of course makes Bandname punk as fuck!
