North Carolina based singer/songwriter Brett Harris may not be a name you recognize, but his finely crafted power pop is on equal footing with his contemporaries the dB’s and even Big Star. These vaunted names are mentioned not only as entry points, but also because Brett collaborated with the dB’s and was part of Big Star’s Third tour. Listening to his occasionally effervescent, bittersweet music, I am also reminded of Tommy Keene and Bob Dylan on “Lies”. HIs lyrics are straightforward but poignant, and he incorporates sonically interesting elements in his songs. The aforementioned “Lies” includes clarinet and barroom piano, helping it stand well above other songs in this genre. Harris reflects on the aging of his peers and also trying to figure out his own life and its direction. Opening track “End of the Rope” is optimistic and bouncy, while “Don’t Look Back” is more introspective and downcast. “High Times” is like the best of Badfinger and Big Star wrapped into one sweet tune. All throughout this record, your ears are caressed by Brett’s knack for spinning magical earworms and his wordsmithing skills keep you engaged. Well worth a listen for all fans of highly infectious power pop.
