Philly’s Cannons ‘ newest release Cuddled By Giants is a tumultuous slab of awesome jams that sets a slightly more accessible tone than their scrappier 2010 release Friendly Muscles . The intensity is still there and hard drumming, singing and heavy hooky off kilter riffs spill out of every song, which consistently bear hilarious and obtuse titles like “I Was Recently In A Situation Where Someone Liked REM” (amazing titles seems to be a Cannons trademark). Cuddled sees the trio further refining their unique voice and polishing things to a heady sparkle.
Beginning with a jaunty Bontempi intro, the first track “You Might Be Scum” is a catchy and driving summer salvo, digressing into darker sounds through the next few tracks, which gradually gain complexity till the June of ‘44 mathiness of “Don’t Opress My Jazz, It’s Free” showcases the skill and restraint of a band at the top of their abilities. Shellac -ian rhythmic inversions flow heavily until a sudden sample from Blue Velvet intros the straighter rock-up of “Reign of Error”. One is just smashed upside the head every few bars with unexpected Mudhoney -level fuzz, obtuse and intriguing vocals and that completely incongruous Bontempi organ chachacha.
This brilliant EP ends succinctly with the ALMOST ska-punk tinged breakdown of “Just Taste the Soup”. Cannons are fierce up and comers who have found their stride and hammer up the gears with Cuddled By Giants… with any luck you’ll be able to catch them on tour in the next few months.
