I first heard these great Mexican shoegazers on a Ride covers compilation put out by The Blog That Celebrates Itself called VA – Leave Them All Behind – A Tribute To Ride (available as a free download). Their obvious devotion to Ride was obvious and great, but it’s not the only trick in their playbook. In fact, Swervedriver also seems to be a huge influence, as evidenced by their cool songs, “All my friends” and “Automatic”.
Guitarist/vocalist Kique Jiménez delivers the sonic goods in spades, with his clear vocals and obvious chops on guitar. Joining Kique on guitar is his wife Alma Saucedo with Noel Legaspi on drums and John Bla on bass.
Lest you think Car Crash Sisters only channels the usual shoegaze bands, they dial it down to dream pop on “Broken”, a pretty acoustic number with echoing background vocals. “Constellated” should be a single, and yes, it sounds like Ride. That is a good thing, because the band creates their own unique take on that vaunted sound. It has the requisite gorgeous and gauzy layers of guitar, and wow, it’s so pretty.
“If You Ever” is something else altogether, another beautiful song floating around and through you. It is the sort of dream pop I favor, hovering on the horizon like the ultimate mirage for thirsty listeners. If anyone comes to mind, it might be The Pale Saints. Of course, people like me who review music hear what they want to hear, and the band’s influences might be completely different. Who knows? All that matters is the music, and rest assured that it’s wonderful. I look forward to hearing a lot more from this up and coming band.
