Desert Owls - Who? (Lazy At Work)

25 August 2010

Yet another band emerges to prove that Montreal is still producing real, top notch rock n roll bands. Desert Owls explodes out the gate with this scorching collection of raw, attitude-laden tunes. Catchy, greasy and fist-pumpingly rockin’ 2 minute epics are on the spartan menu on Who? that should and could become your summer mixtape-slash-roadtrip anthems. From the opening title track to the Kyuss laced riffbomb of the closer “Lips”, Desert Owls howl instead of hoot, a beautiful noise of tortured souls on fire.

While the ferocious detuned stomp of these 5 rockers bring to mind the heaviness of soul and bottom end of Nirvana , Mudhoney and the 90’s Northwest scene, there are subtle harmonies and chord changes throughout that achieve a magical balance of balls-out rock and deeply submerged Beatles -esque pop songwriting. Every song has it’s flashpoint of hooky brilliance. “Say When” is a constantly building exploder that showcases singer/guitarist Sebastian Freeman ’s tortured but tuneful howl and mastery of bang-on riff placement. Luca Fantigrossi holds up the bottom end with attitude on the thudding “Rockettt Kicker” and JP Aubin ’s caveman drums propel the whole EP forward nastily, like a pimped out Impala. Every track on this EP is a catchy slab of rock perfection, doing what the best rock does, making you want to jump around, drive real fast, fuck, fight… you know how that is. If you don’t, I feel bad for you.. try to have some fun in life, meanwhile I’ll be in the moshpit at the next Desert Owls show.

As the tsunami of neck tattooed poseur-core continues to fill Hot Topic cashes around the nation, those who take the “raw food” approach to their rock and roll should seek out Desert Owls and take heart that the real deal is still out there.
