As a core of nerds know, twenty-first century prog rock takes inspiration from more than just Rush, Yes and Dream Theater. Kentucky’s Dream the Electric Sheep, for example, looks toward shoegaze and British guitar rock for its widescreen anthemry; some influence from Sunny Day Real Estate‘s more progressive moments creeps in as well. The way the trio ebbs and flows through the epics “How Long We Wait,” “Elizabeth” and “To Love is to Leave” indicates a familiarity with melody and dynamics that comes from a wide range of stylistic tastes. Arena rock majesty minus the ego-soaked aftertaste.
