As indicated by the title, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II is a sequel to Earth‘s identically-named 2011 opus. As with the first one, it’s a wordless journey into an inner heart of darkness, with minimalist (but accessible) melody meeting melancholy mood. “His Teeth Did Brightly Shine” crawls steadily forward like cloaked monks through the mist, as leader Dylan Carlson bravely plucks his guitar to stave off ghosts. “Waltz (A Multiplicity of Doors)” lets Carlson’s solemn tone weave around Lori Goldston‘s cello like a pair of lazily copulating snakes deep in their den, while “The Corascene Dog” allows their melody lines to act as tributaries, running into the same blackwater river. As is usual for Earth these days, there’s nothing here that rocks in any conventional sense, though “The Rakehell,” with its distorted guitars and marginally faster rhythm, almost does. But rocking out is not the point of Earth – establishing a mood is, and with the help of dark angels and light demons, the band has done just that.
