Elika-Girls, Be Serious 7” (Saint Marie Records)

Elika is a Brooklyn-based band with a sweet-voiced lead singer (Evagelia Maravelias) and dream pop leanings. They expanded from the duo of Maravelias and Brian Wenckebach into a four piece, and have recorded quite a few releases since 2006. Their hard work has earned them international recognition and cachet with producer Ulrich Schnauss.Girls, Be Serious is the first of a series of planned 7” releases over the next year. If they match the quality here, then listeners are in for a treat. The hummable A-side “Moving Faster” is chock full of snappy harmonizing and good times, but it’s the B-side “Bury” which really grabs me. Starting off with a familiar Radiohead riff, it morphs into something special, with Beach House style singing and watery tones. Some may call this ‘electrogaze’, but I call it a taste of dream pop heaven.
