David Lucien Matheke, the man behind Endometruim Cuntplow, brings something to noise that is rarely heard within the same album, i.e., diversity. Sure, there are differences within the genre, e.g., the harsh sounds of Merzbow or CCCC vs. the eerie low-end pulsing of Lustmord vs. the power electronics of Whitehouse, but somehow, Matheke manages to use all these elements on a single collection, making it almost a rock’n‘roll album with tempo and stylistic changes, instead of a single-minded onslaught of sound.
Ecoplasty opens with “Trip Currents [An Intro],” a dark, pulsing track that could almost pass for an early noisy Throbbing Gristle song, then segues into “Leaking” – nine and a half minutes of ominous Yen Pox-ian drone that culminates in haunted vocals, a deranged soul calling forth from a deep, cavernous abyss. “Thoughts Taste Like Dead Things” sounds like Whitehouse’s William Bennet remixing Ministry.
The next few tracks are harsh noise that teeter between Aube‘s carefully constructed compositions and Controlled Bleeding‘s early sonic attack. “Beneath Lunar Rocks [An Outro]” closes the album with a return to the Lustmord/Yen Pox darkness punctuated by distorted voices lecturing on our current ecological troubles.
Simply put, this is noise at its absolute best and a perfect starting point for anybody who’s been curious about the genre but too afraid to ask. It’s a dynamic album that truly sets the standards for what noise should and could be. Hopefully, noisicians out there will take notice and realize, it’s not just about hyper-distortion, but about texture, feeling and originality.
