FOOD brings together veterans of 80s/90s indie rock in bassist Eric Vermillion from Gumball, drummer Mike Quinlan from the Cynics and, most significantly, Ed Crawford from the recently-reunited fIREHOSE. Three Pieces From Candyland (four pieces if you get the vinyl) unsurprisingly hews to the straightforward rock/pop style of Crawford’s fIREHOSE tunes, a la “Honey Please” and “In My Mind.” “Santa Maria” rocks out cleanly and sweetly, “You Don’t Know” puts a ballad through a power chord ringer and the countrified “Jesus and Johnny Cash” shitkicks its way to the finish line. Given the level of talent and experience at work here, there’s not a bummer in the bunch. A promising start.
