The duo of writers/singers/multi-instrumentalists SOLON BIXLER (ex-*30 SECOND TO MARS*) and RACHEL STOLTE may be small in number, but they’re big in sound on Remind Me Where the Light Is, the second album by GREAT NORTHERN. The couple’s lush, widescreen music fills the air the way warm water fills a bathtub. Big songs like “Fingers,” “Warning” and “New Tricks” could be oppressive, but the band’s efficient use of open spaces and Stolte’s fetching voice keep the tracks grounded while retaining the reach-for-the-sky ambience. There’s no reason these songs wouldn’t fit quite well on your local modern rock radio station, and a refreshing noise they’d make, too.
