Hammock-Sleepover Series Volume 2 (Hammock Music)

Cover art for The Sleepover Series Volume 2, by Hammock.
21 September 2014

Sleepover Series Volume 2 is part of an experimental music project created by Marc Byrd as a balm for his insomnia. It is not part of Hammock’s usual release stream, but rather, it is for anyone who suffers from anxiety, depression, or other problems that interfere with sleep. The calming instrumental drones contained on this two disk release may very well lull you into dreamland. Much of Hammock’s music has this dreamy quality, but this series seems to focus on drones that almost mimic white noise. Although I’ve suffered from fractured sleep for more than a year due to health problems, I haven’t tried using music to help me drift off; perhaps giving this a whirl is worthwhile.

Even if you don’t have sleep problems, Hammock’s heavenly wall of noise is also conducive to deep relaxation and meditation. I also use music of this genre when I do restorative yoga. Song titles such as “Original Light” and “A Sunlit Absence” only hint at the majesty created by Marc and Andrew Thompson, but they are a starting point.

This is perhaps a bit darker than material you’ve come to expect from Hammock, and that’s as it should be with music designed for the wee hours of the night. If you haven’t heard them before, you might enjoy this, but know that it is not indicative of their other work, that there are much brighter volumes to start with. Existing fans will definitely like this latest work, as well as those looking for interesting and beautiful instrumental music.
