Harvestman – In a Dark Tongue (Neurot)

3 September 2009

HARVESTMAN is the mask worn by NEUROSIS co-frontdude STEVE VON TILL for his non-singer/songwriter experiments, of which In a Dark Tongue is the second. And what an odd but absorbing journey it takes. Folk music, particularly the kind that evokes the dawn breaking over a clearing deep in the forest, is at the heart of the music here, but to call this a folk album would be misleading, even if it includes a cover of JOHN MARTYN‘s “Eibhli Ghail Chiuin Ni Chearbhail.” Von Till layers all manner of psychedelic and spaced-out sounds – synths, percussion, unidentifiable noises, lots of electric guitars – over his delicate melodies, crafting soundscapes that evoke mysterious forest gods emerging from long slumbers and contemplating their places in the 21st century. Often unsettling, frequently rocking, ultimately beautiful, In a Dark Tongue is an acid pagan manifesto proclaiming a union of nature and technology that bodes well for an evolving universe.
