It’s strange to find a French band so steeped in ‘90s U.K. Britpop, however this Paris quartet’s superb 2014 debut EP Our Romance Ghost summoned that scene so succinctly, it silenced skeptics. But My Electric surpasses it. The pounding “Beyond My Control,” gargantuan “New York,” radiant title track, and swaggering “One Way Love” again trigger touchstones like The Verve, Suede, Oasis, and Catherine Wheel, thanks to Jean-Pierre Bonnetier’s passionate, pained brogue (his desperate lyrics often depicting lustful, late-night liaisons), the soaring, stratospheric guitars of Bonnetier and Maxime Auvity, and the booming “basse/batterie” of Stephane Barrier and Arthur Villanneau. Elsewhere, brisk burners “Pleasure and Lust” and “Insinuations” conjure current favorites Editors, Maxïmo Park, and Franz Ferdinand, while the colossal “Kamikaze” closes the LP in a fuzzy, Jesus & Mary Chain fog.
