Although I used to be a huge fan of Ben Folds, this is my first experience with drummer Darren Jessee‘s post- Ben Folds Five band. Their third Lp sounds absolutely nothing like Ben Folds Five nor should it since it’s been over a decade since that band broke up.
Instead, it nicely splits the difference between Nada Surf and the quieter moments of late ’90s and early ’00s Wilco (i.e. when the late, great Jay Bennett was still in the band). I kept thinking of “Radio Cure” from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot when I was listening to this. Tobin Sprout‘s recent album The Bluebirds of Happiness Tried to Land on My Shoulder is also another similar record. This is definitely recommended for fans of the softer, more adult-oriented and mature side of power-pop.
